What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a form of alternative medicine that places emphasis on the healing power of the body. It is a blend of western and traditional medicine which encompasses herbal medicine, Asian medicine/acupuncture, nutrition and homeopathy. Naturopathic doctors address the fundamental causes of disease, heal the whole person through individualized treatment, and teach the principles of healthy living and preventative medicine. An ND will spend over an hour with each patient, delving into every aspect of their chief complaint, as well as other contributing health factors such as exercise, diet, and sleep. Laboratory testing and more detailed investigation may be required to determine a diagnosis. A unique treatment plan is then created with the patient to help them achieve their specific health goals.

What conditions are treated?

The list is endless of conditions that can be treated through natural medicine. They range from paediatric to geriatric concerns, acute to chronic conditions and physical to mental illness. Hormonal imbalance, digestive issues, and endocrine disorders are among some of the most popular chief complaints from patients that walk through the door of an NDs office. Beyond a diagnosed illness, the following are other general wellness conditions that respond well to naturopathic medicine:

  • Stress

  • Fatigue

  • Weight Loss

  • Sleep Disturbances

  • Surgery Support

  • General Screening

  • Pain Management

  • Nutritional Counselling
